Yakima County Fire Today — Residents and travelers across Yakima County, Washington, are continuing to monitor fire activity as recent brush fires and suspicious fire incidents have affected parts of the region during the summer wildfire season.
Recent reports indicate that fire crews have responded to multiple incidents in the Yakima area, including a brush fire near Selah that temporarily impacted Interstate 82 and separate fires noted near the Yakima Greenway. Officials have continued to emphasize the importance of fire safety as dry conditions increase wildfire risks across central Washington.
A notable recent incident involved a brush fire near Selah that resulted in the temporary closure of Interstate 82 in both directions between Yakima and Ellensburg. Traffic was diverted while emergency crews worked to contain the fire, with westbound drivers directed off the interstate at Exit 26 and eastbound motorists diverted at Thrall Road, Exit 3. State Route 821 was identified as an alternate route.
Officials reported that there were no evacuations or evacuation warnings in place during that incident, although the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office continued to monitor the situation. The closure highlighted the potential impact that even localized brush fires can have on major transportation routes.
Another fire incident occurred near the Yakima Greenway, where approximately three acres were affected near westbound U.S. Highway 12. The Yakima Fire Department responded to the blaze, extinguished the fire, and started investigating after determining that the circumstances appeared suspicious.
Agencies noted that the Greenway area was particularly concerning because it is used by pedestrians and bicyclists. Representatives also reminded the public that signs in the area prohibit fires and camping, and they encouraged anyone with information about suspicious activity to contact law enforcement.
Additional fires were later stated in the Yakima Greenway area, with three separate fires burning approximately four acres and prompting a possible arson probe. The Yakima Fire Department temporarily closed part of the Greenway to allow firefighters to safely respond. No injuries were reported in connection with those fires.
Fire danger remains a concern throughout Yakima County due to conditions including heat, low humidity, dry vegetation, smoke, and possible strong winds. Weather spokespeople have warned that changing conditions, including potential lightning activity, could increase the risk of new fires developing or existing fires spreading.
Yakima County officials have also reminded locals that seasonal burn restrictions remain in effect in unincorporated areas of the county from June 1 through August 31, 2026. Neighbors are advised to follow local fire regulations, avoid unsafe outdoor burning, and remain aware of current fire conditions. Officials go on to monitor fire activity and encourage the public to prioritize safety as wildfire risks remain elevated.
