Demetrius Fleming Obituary, ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. — Demetrius Fleming, 38, has died after being found deceased at a residence on Roanoke Avenue in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, in what authorities described as an apparent hanging. Police responded to the residence Friday following a 911 call reporting an attempted suicide.

Per to Roanoke Rapids Police Chief Lawrence Wiggins, emergency personnel found Fleming already deceased when they arrived at the residence. Police said Fleming was found connected to a ligature, but officials have not disclosed what type of ligature was involved.

Despite the circumstances reported in the 911 call, investigators have not reached a final conclusion regarding Fleming’s passing. The case is being treated as an open and equivocal death inquiry as detectives work to review the available evidence and determine the cause and manner of loss.

Chief Wiggins has urged members of the public not to rely on speculation or unverified information circulating online and on social media. He reported investigators are not operating under a predetermined theory and are considering all possibilities as they work to establish what happened.

“We are not working from any strict assumption,” Wiggins reported. “Everything is on the table.” The chief also emphasized that investigators intend to allow the evidence to guide the investigation rather than allowing incomplete information or public speculation to influence the case.

Police noted the 911 call that prompted the emergency reaction was made by someone close to Fleming who was not at the residence at the time. Agencies have not released additional information about the caller or the events that preceded Fleming’s loss.

The police department has also withheld certain details about Fleming’s personal life while the probe remains active. No arrests or charges have been disclosed in connection with his passing, and investigators continue to gather and evaluate evidence.
