Barry Lynn Pearson Obituary, GENESEO, Ill. — Barry Lynn Pearson, a reliable wide receiver who played five NFL seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Kansas City Chiefs during the 1970s, died on August 16 at the age of 76. Pearson was born February 4, 1950, in Geneseo, Illinois.
Pearson built a meaningful football career during one of the NFL’s most competitive eras, earning a reputation as a steady possession receiver with a knack for making timely catches. His consistency, toughness and willingness to contribute in different situations assisted him remain a valuable member of two professional teams.
A standout at Geneseo High School, Pearson went on to play college football at Northwestern University. His performances with the Wildcats helped pave the way for his entry into the NFL in 1972, when he joined the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Pearson appeared in 14 games for Pittsburgh and started 10 games in 1973. That season, he recorded 23 receptions for 317 yards and three touchdowns, including a 46-yard reception that demonstrated his ability to make big plays when opportunities arose.
Pearson joined the Kansas City Chiefs in 1974 and spent the majority of his professional career with the organization. His best statistical season came in 1975, when he recorded 36 receptions for 608 yards and three touchdowns while averaging 16.9 yards per catch. He also contributed on special teams, returning punts and kickoffs during the season.
During three seasons with Kansas City, Pearson appeared in 36 games and started 18, finishing his Chiefs career with 63 receptions for 995 yards and four touchdowns. Across 50 career NFL games, he totaled 86 receptions for 1,312 receiving yards and seven touchdowns, averaging 15.3 yards per catch.
Pearson’s career reflected the role of a dependable, team-first receiver who could move the chains, make contested catches and contribute when circumstances demanded it. Though he was not a headline star, his five seasons in professional football represented a period of commitment and perseverance in an era known for physical play and intense competition.
